The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
