Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
