Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
